Runway Incursion Prevention: Hold-Short Checklist

Avoid a runway incursion: brief the taxi route from the airport diagram first, read hold-short line geometry right, and read back every ATC instruction.

Brief the full taxi route off the current airport diagram before you move, not from memory of a field you’ve flown a hundred times. Read back every hold-short and runway-crossing instruction word for word. And the second you lose the picture of where you are, stop the airplane and ask. Those three habits cover most of what turns a routine taxi into a runway incursion report.

Brief the route before you push the throttle up

Pull up the current airport diagram before you call for taxi, not after you’re already rolling. Trace the route from your position to the runway: which taxiways, how many runway crossings, and where the hot spots sit along the way. AIM 4-3-20 puts the responsibility on you directly, not the controller: it’s the pilot’s job to stay familiar with the current airport diagrams and charts before accepting a taxi clearance.

If ATC assigns a Standard Taxi Route you don’t recognize, the same paragraph gives you an out: ask for clarification, or decline it and request progressive instructions instead of guessing your way through an unfamiliar routing. At a non-towered field nobody’s assigning you a route, which makes the self-brief more important, not less. Say the plan out loud before you release the brakes: taxiways, crossings, hot spots, runway.

Run a sterile cockpit while the airplane is moving

Part 121 and 135 crews fly under a hard sterile cockpit rule below 10,000 feet, 14 CFR 121.542 and 135.100: no non-essential conversation or activity during critical phases of flight, and taxi is one of them. Part 91 has no identical regulation, but the FAA wrote AC 91-73B, Parts 91 and 135 Single-Pilot Procedures During Taxi Operations, to push the same discipline into single-pilot GA as a recommended practice.

The practical version: run your checklist, program the GPS, brief the departure, and make non-essential radio calls before you’re moving. If something genuinely needs doing while you’re rolling, stop the airplane, do it, then continue. The mechanism is the same one that drives checklist misses in the air — attention pulled inside the cockpit is attention not on the taxiway, the sign, or the airplane crossing in front of you. Taxi is a flow you run by looking outside, the same logic behind running flows before you check them.

Hold-short line geometry: solid side, dashed side

The standard runway holding position marking, AIM 2-3-5, is four yellow lines painted across the taxiway: two solid, two dashed, spaced either six or twelve inches apart. The solid pair sits on the side where you hold. Approaching a runway from the taxiway, you stop before the solid lines and don’t cross them without an explicit clearance, at a towered field, or without confirming the runway’s clear and it’s genuinely your turn, at a non-towered one. The dashed pair sits on the runway side of the marking. After landing, you aren’t clear of the runway, per AIM 4-3-21, until you’re past both the runway edge itself and the holding position markings.

The layout that catches people is closely spaced parallel runways sharing a connector taxiway. One taxiway can carry hold-short markings for two different runways within a few hundred feet of each other, or the taxiway you exit one runway onto leads almost immediately to the hold line for the parallel one. Cross the first line thinking you’re clear of “the runway,” and the second line is a different runway with its own traffic. This exact layout is a big part of why the FAA runs a hot spot program at all.

Hot spots aren’t decoration on the diagram

A hot spot, per the Pilot/Controller Glossary, is a location on an airport’s movement area with a history of, or potential for, runway incursions or confusion, where pilots and vehicle drivers need extra attention. On the airport diagram they show up as a circled or hatched area with a number, and the Chart Supplement or a dedicated FAA hot spot chart spells out exactly what’s confusing about that one spot: an intersection at an odd angle, two close hold lines, a taxiway that reads like a runway from certain approach angles.

Fold hot spots into the pre-taxi brief instead of treating them as background noise on the diagram. Check whether your planned route crosses one, and know what it’s warning about before you get there. Reading the note for the first time while you’re rolling through the spot defeats the point of it being marked.

Read back every hold-short and runway-crossing instruction

At a towered field, AIM 4-3-18 requires approval before you move onto the movement area at all, and a clearance before crossing any runway; ATC issues an explicit clearance for each crossing. You’re expected to read back the runway assignment, any clearance to enter a specific runway, and any instruction to hold short of a runway or to line up and wait. Controllers are trained to get that readback from you, so give it clearly rather than clicking the mic with a mumble.

If the instruction names two runways, “cross runway 16, hold short of runway 22L,” read back both, not just the one your brain grabbed first. None of this shifts responsibility off you. The same paragraph is explicit that a clearance doesn’t relieve the pilot of the duty to avoid a collision, so keep your eyes outside while you comply.

When you’re not sure, stop and ask

If the taxiway doesn’t match the diagram, a sign doesn’t make sense, or you’ve lost track of where you are on the field, stop the airplane. AIM 4-3-20 says it plainly: a pilot who becomes disoriented during taxi should advise ATC immediately and request detailed or progressive taxi instructions, where the controller walks you turn by turn to the runway or the ramp. That’s not a failure. It’s the system working the way it’s designed to.

Stopped and clear of any hold line costs you nothing but a few seconds. Guessing costs a lot more, on a good day a pilot deviation and on a bad one a runway occupied by two aircraft at once. At a non-towered field, “stop and ask” becomes “stop and look”: don’t cross an unfamiliar hold line or move onto a runway on a guess. Confirm it’s clear with your own eyes and ears, then go, and if the picture still isn’t right, sit until it is.

Put the brief where your eyes already are

The taxi brief works best living on the same page as your before-taxi checklist item, not as a separate mental task competing with everything else before departure. If your before-taxi section currently reads “brakes — check, flight controls — free,” add a line for the diagram brief and the hot spot check right next to it, the way the Cessna 172 template lays it out in the builder. The radio side of this overlaps with non-towered CTAF calls: the position report you make before taxi is the same discipline as the hold-short readback, just aimed at other airplanes instead of a controller.
