Enter the downwind at a 45-degree angle, abeam the midpoint of the landing runway, at pattern altitude, after you have listened on CTAF long enough to know which runway everyone else is using. Coming from the opposite side, overfly the airport 500 feet above pattern altitude, fly two miles clear, descend to pattern altitude out there, and come back to that same 45. Both come straight from the FAA’s AC 90-66C, Non-Towered Airport Flight Operations, dated 6/6/23.
That is the short answer. The argument is the long one. Pattern-entry threads on Pilots of America have run for years on the same questions: what about when the published pattern doesn’t work, is a straight-in okay, who yields between the 45 and the airplane turning crosswind. One pilot near 100 hours described being taught two different entries by his CFI and his DPE. Another noted that entry at non-towered fields wasn’t a point of emphasis years ago, and the confusion never got cleaned up.
The FAA regulates pattern flow, not pattern entry
One sentence resolves most of it. AC 90-66C paragraph 8.2.1: “The FAA does not regulate traffic pattern entry, only traffic pattern flow.” Your entry geometry is a recommendation. The flow is not.
Turn direction is regulatory. Under 14 CFR 91.126(b), turns at a non-towered field in Class G are to the left unless the airport says otherwise, and the sectional marks a right pattern with “RP” plus the runway, so “RP 32” means right traffic for Runway 32. That flow follows the airport up the alphabet rather than stopping at Class G: 91.127(a) applies 91.126 in a Class E surface area, 91.129(a) applies it in Class D, and 91.130(a) routes Class C operations through 91.129 to the same place. That chain is what governs the pattern at a towered field after the tower closes. The AC also notes that an aircraft outside the pattern is not bound by 91.126(b), which is what makes the overfly-and-come-back entry legal rather than a right-turn violation.
Your actual obligation arriving is simpler than the geometry: observe the aircraft already in the pattern and conform to the flow in use. Nobody has to reshuffle for your preferred entry.
The 45 to the midfield downwind
Paragraph 11.3 is the whole procedure in three lines. Be at pattern altitude. Allow enough time to see the entire pattern before you enter. Entries made while descending create collision hazards and should be avoided.
Pattern altitude is 1,000 AGL for propeller-driven airplanes unless the Chart Supplement publishes something else, and 1,500 AGL, or 500 above the established TPA, for large and turbine airplanes. A field with a published 1,500-foot TPA for terrain or noise abatement is not unusual, and arriving 500 low is how you end up under somebody’s downwind.
The rest of the numbers, from paragraph 11.4 and Appendix A:
- Hold pattern altitude until at least abeam the approach end of the landing runway.
- Turn base at about 45 degrees relative bearing from the approach end.
- Complete the turn to final at least a quarter mile out.
- Staying in the pattern? Turn crosswind only beyond the departure end and within 300 feet of TPA.
That last one drives the crosswind-versus-45 conflict. An airplane doing pattern work turns crosswind close in and climbing; you arrive level from outside. Neither of you has a rule to hide behind, both owe see-and-avoid under 91.113(b), and the arriving pilot is the one expected to fit in.
Arriving from the wrong side of the airport
This is where the CFI and the DPE disagreed. Appendix A shows two methods side by side.
Preferred (A): overfly the airport 500 feet above pattern altitude, fly clear of the traffic pattern about two miles, descend to pattern altitude, turn inbound, then yield to downwind traffic and enter the midfield downwind at 45 degrees.
Alternate (B): cross midfield at pattern altitude, yield to the preferred 45 and the downwind traffic, then turn downwind.
Both live in the same document, so both pilots in that argument were right. The AC adds two conditions people skip: be at pattern altitude when you cross midfield, and don’t cross midfield when the pattern is congested. The body of the AC describes only the 45 to midfield downwind. The alternate sits in the appendix, which hints at what the FAA wants from you at a busy strange field.
My habit at unfamiliar fields is the overfly. It buys a look at the segmented circle and windsock, and I’d rather burn two minutes than guess which runway a silent airplane is using.
Straight-in landing etiquette
A VFR straight-in is legal. Paragraph 9.11.1 also says the FAA discourages it because of midair risk, and that if you fly one, self-announce between 8 and approximately 10 miles out and coordinate with the other traffic. Then the part that gets skipped: a pilot on a straight-in has no “particular priority over other aircraft in the traffic pattern” and must comply with 91.113(g).
That rule gives the lower aircraft the right of way, “but it shall not take advantage of this rule to cut in front of another which is on final approach to land or to overtake that aircraft.” A fast airplane on a five-mile final does not own the runway. Watsonville in August 2022 is the case to keep in mind, where a twin flying a fast straight-in overtook a 152 in the pattern and both airplanes were lost.
Most CTAF scolding comes from surprise. Announce early, give distances in miles instead of local landmarks nobody knows, and if three airplanes are in the pattern, spend the extra 90 seconds and join the downwind.
CTAF pattern entry calls that actually help
Paragraph 9.5 sets the timing: arrivals broadcast intentions a minimum of 10 miles out, departures at least 10 minutes before taxi. Paragraph 9.13 notes that failing to communicate has contributed to near midairs and could be treated as careless or reckless operation.
The content, from 9.8 and 9.11.2:
- Airport name first, then type, call sign, position, altitude, intention, and the airport name again at the end. That bookend matters when two fields share a frequency.
- Say the type. “Skyhawk” tells me what to look for and how fast it’s moving; paint schemes and colors don’t.
- Use the runway number. The AC says specifically not to say “active runway.”
- In the pattern: entering left downwind for Runway 27, on the left downwind, on left base, on final.
- Never “any traffic in the area, please advise.” The AC calls it not a recognized phrase, not to be used under any condition.
- If no tower, CTAF, or UNICOM is depicted for the field, use MULTICOM 122.9, which is paragraph 9.6.
Listen, look, announce, join
Same four steps, same order, every unfamiliar field.
Listen. Tune CTAF well before 10 miles and count airplanes. You are after one fact: which runway is in use. Two calls usually tell you.
Look. If nobody’s talking, get eyes on the segmented circle or windsock. Paragraph 11.2 says to check the indicators from above the pattern, then proceed to a point well clear before descending to pattern altitude.
Announce. Ten miles, then entering downwind, base, final.
Join. At pattern altitude, on the 45, abeam the midpoint. Level, not descending.
It works because it’s a flow, the same reason flows beat reading a card in the pattern. Keeping the arrival section short enough to glance at is checklist design.
When the published pattern doesn’t work
Sometimes it doesn’t. Terrain on one side, a noise-sensitive neighborhood, or a light-wind day where one airplane uses 09 and everybody else is on 27. The AC stays consistent: if other traffic is present, use the runway they’re using, and if you need a secondary runway for length, stay out of the flow to the primary.
If the picture doesn’t make sense, leave. Fly out, sort it out, come back on a clean 45. Excessive maneuvering at low altitude is its own hazard, which the AC calls out twice.
Check the field’s TPA and any RP note before you’re 10 miles out, on paper or on the EFB. My arrival card carries CTAF, TPA, and runway lengths so I’m not thumbing through an app at 1,500 feet; the Cessna 172 template is a fine place to add one, and the student pilot hub has the handbooks.
AC 90-66C runs 28 pages and costs nothing. Read paragraph 11 and Appendix A before your next trip to a strange field, then ask your CFI which opposite-side entry they want from you, so you aren’t sorting it out on a checkride. AIM 4-1-9 and 4-3-3 cover the same ground with more phraseology.
Common questions
Is the 45-degree entry to downwind required by regulation?
No. AC 90-66C states plainly that the FAA does not regulate traffic pattern entry, only traffic pattern flow. The 45 to the midfield downwind is a recommendation. What is regulatory is the direction of turns once you are in the pattern: 14 CFR 91.126(b) requires left turns in Class G unless the Chart Supplement or the sectional says otherwise, and the same requirement follows the airport into controlled airspace through 91.127 for Class E, 91.129 for Class D, and 91.130 for Class C, which is what applies at a towered field once the tower closes.
How do I enter the pattern if I'm arriving from the opposite side of the runway?
