What Size Should a Kneeboard Checklist Be?

Half-letter, A5, or full Letter for a kneeboard checklist: sizing, type, folding, and lamination advice, plus when full-size pages belong in a binder instead.

Half-letter, 5.5 by 8.5 inches, is the right size for a kneeboard checklist. It matches the clip width on nearly every kneeboard sold, it fits the leg without overhanging your knee, and it’s what most commercial checklist products ship at. A5 works too if that’s what your printer defaults to. Full Letter belongs in a binder in the seat pocket, not clipped to your leg. Here’s the reasoning behind each of those calls.

Half-letter vs A5 vs full Letter

Half-letter (5.5“ x 8.5“) is a cut sheet of standard US Letter paper, folded or trimmed in half. It’s the size most kneeboards are actually designed around: the clip, the elastic strap, and the leg board itself all assume something in this footprint. If you’re printing at home on Letter paper, half-letter is just Letter cut or folded once, no waste.

A5 (148mm x 210mm, roughly 5.8“ x 8.3“) is the international standard and what you’ll get by default from a printer set to A4 paper. It’s close enough to half-letter that it clips into the same kneeboards without issue. The only friction is template math: a layout built for one doesn’t map exactly onto the other, so if you’re pulling a template from a US source and printing on A4, expect a little extra white space or a slightly tighter margin.

Full Letter (8.5“ x 11“) is too big to clip to a kneeboard and stay usable. It flops, it blocks half your lap, and in a low-wing single it’s fighting the yoke for space. Full Letter has a real job: reference material you flip through on the ground or in cruise, in a binder, not something you’re managing at eye level during a busy phase of flight. If you’re not sure which to pick, default to half-letter. It’s the size your kneeboard was built for.

Type size and readability in turbulence and sunlight

The size of the page only matters if you can actually read what’s on it, and the two conditions that break readability are turbulence and sun glare. Both are common, not edge cases.

In turbulence your eyes are tracking a moving line while the page itself is bouncing. Small type and tight line spacing make that worse. Run body text at 12pt minimum, and go 14pt or larger for anything you’ve flagged as a killer item or a section header. Sunlight does two things: it washes out light gray text against white paper, and glare off a laminated sheet can blank the page entirely at the wrong angle. Stick to solid black text on white or off-white background. Skip light gray “secondary” text styling that looks fine on a monitor and disappears at 9,000 feet with the sun at your 2 o’clock. If you laminate, expect some glare and angle the board rather than fighting it with contrast tricks.

Folding layouts: single sheet, trifold, or 4-fold

How much content you’re carrying decides the fold.

A single half-letter sheet, front and back, covers a simple trainer: normal procedures on one side, emergency and abnormal on the other. This is the right call for a C172 or a Cherokee where the whole checklist is short.

A trifold (three panels per side, folding down to roughly a third of a Letter sheet) buys you more real estate while still fitting the kneeboard once folded out. Useful when you’ve got enough normal-procedure sections that a single sheet feels cramped, but you don’t want to carry a bound booklet.

A 4-fold or booklet layout goes further, usually for complex singles or light twins where systems checks and multiple emergency procedures add real length. Past this point, weigh whether you’re still building a kneeboard checklist or you’ve actually built a small manual, in which case a binder is the better container.

Whichever fold you use, keep the phase-of-flight order intact across the panels. A pilot flipping panels mid-approach shouldn’t have to hunt for where “Before Landing” went.

2-up printing on Letter, then cutting

The cheapest way to get clean half-letter pages is 2-up printing: lay two half-letter pages out on one Letter sheet in your print dialog, print single or double-sided, then cut down the middle. Most print drivers and PDF viewers support an “N-up” or “pages per sheet” option that does this without any manual layout work. Print double-sided with the right binding edge setting and the front/back content lines up after the cut, so you’re not trimming twice.

A paper cutter gives a cleaner edge than scissors, and it matters more than it sounds like: a slightly angled cut is annoying every time you pull the sheet out of a kneeboard clip.

Lamination and sleeves

Lamination makes a checklist durable: it survives fuel on your hands, coffee, humidity, and years of clipping and unclipping without the corners softening. The tradeoff is permanence. Once laminated, you’re not editing that page, you’re reprinting and relaminating.

A cheap sheet-protector sleeve is the better call while you’re still revising. Print, slide it in, fly with it, mark it up with a grease pencil or dry-erase marker if you want, and swap the insert in seconds when something changes. Once your layout has stabilized and you’re not touching it anymore, that’s the point to laminate.

Either way, avoid gloss laminate outdoors if you can get matte. Gloss adds exactly the kind of glare that fights you in the sunlight scenario above.

When full-size pages belong in a binder instead

Full-size Letter pages have a place, just not on your leg. Reference material you’re not managing in real time, like weight and balance tables, performance charts across a range of conditions, or a full oral-exam prep binder, works better at full size where you can actually read a dense table without squinting. The rule of thumb: if you’re reading it while flying, it’s kneeboard-sized. If you’re reading it on the ramp, in the FBO, or during a debrief, full size is fine and often better.
