Private Pilot Oral Exam: What DPEs Actually Ask

What DPEs actually ask on the private pilot oral exam, plus a prep checklist organized by ACS area of operation so you study the right things first.

The private pilot oral is a conversation built from a document you can read weeks in advance. Your examiner runs it from a plan of action drawn out of the Private Pilot – Airplane ACS (FAA-S-ACS-6C), which means the topic list is not a mystery: pilot qualifications and currency, aircraft airworthiness, weather, cross-country planning, airspace, performance, systems, human factors, and emergencies. What you can’t predict is depth and order, because DPEs follow the thread your last answer opened. AskACFI’s long-running private pilot oral exam questions page says exactly that about a real oral: many of the questions asked came out of the applicant’s answers to the previous ones.

That single fact should reshape how you study. You are not preparing to recall answers. You are preparing to talk for two or three hours about how you keep a specific airplane, on a specific day, legal and safe.

The ACS is your question bank

The ACS breaks the private certificate into twelve areas of operation, and each one contains tasks with the knowledge, risk management, and skill elements the examiner may test. Roughly speaking, areas I and II carry the oral, area IX (Emergency Operations) and area XI (Night Operations) contribute a large share of the scenario questions, and the rest is mostly flown.

Pilots have been reverse-engineering this for years. The Help with oral exam thread on Pilots of America keeps landing on the same method: take the ACS, go line by line through the knowledge elements, find the FAA source for each one, and write your own notes as you go. That’s a better use of a week than reading the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge cover to cover a second time.

A prep checklist by area of operation

Here’s the structure I’d use. This is study organization, not a regulatory list, and your CFI’s plan for you may reasonably differ.

Pilot qualifications. Certificates and documents required to fly (14 CFR 61.3), medical requirements (61.23), plus 61.113(i) and Part 68 for BasicMed, flight review (61.56), recent flight experience for carrying passengers day and night (61.57), and what your private privileges actually permit around cost sharing and compensation (61.113). Be able to open your own logbook and point at the entries that make you current.

Airworthiness requirements. Documents that live in the airplane (91.9 and 91.203), required inspections including annual and 100-hour (91.409) and transponder (91.413), ELT (91.207), day and night VFR equipment (91.205), and what you may legally do with an inoperative item (91.213). Then the harder version of the question: show me in this airplane’s logbooks that it’s airworthy today.

Weather. Sources, products, and interpretation, now consolidated in the Aviation Weather Handbook (FAA-H-8083-28). Read a METAR and TAF aloud. Know basic VFR minimums by airspace class (91.155) and what you’d do when the forecast puts you at the edge of them.

Cross-country planning. Preflight action required before any flight (91.103), VFR fuel reserves (91.151), and VFR cruising altitudes (91.159). Bring the plan you built and defend the choices in it.

National airspace system. Class A through G dimensions, entry and equipment requirements, and special use airspace. AIM chapter 3 is the readable version. Draw the airspace around your home field from memory, then check it against the chart.

Performance and limitations. Density altitude, the charts in your POH, and weight and balance run for the actual people flying that day. Know your airplane’s V-speeds and where each one comes from.

Systems. Fuel, electrical, engine, and instruments for the airplane you’re testing in, sourced from your POH rather than a generic diagram. If you fly a Skyhawk, the systems section of the Cessna 172 checklist is a decent map of what you should be able to describe.

Human factors. Hypoxia, hyperventilation, spatial disorientation, and the medical material in AIM chapter 8. IMSAFE and PAVE, plus the five hazardous attitudes and their antidotes, from the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (FAA-H-8083-25).

Emergencies. Engine failure at altitude and after takeoff, fire, electrical failure, and the true memory items for your airplane. This is where the examiner most often shifts from questions to scenarios, and where knowing the difference between flows and checklists shows up in how you answer.

Track each line green, yellow, or red. The red list is your study plan.

Explain it back in your own words

The technique that consistently earns credit is unglamorous: for every element on your checklist, close the book and say the answer out loud, in plain language, as if you were briefing a passenger. Not the regulation’s wording. Yours.

This works for two reasons. Recitation from memory collapses the moment a DPE rephrases the question, and it collapses completely when the question becomes a scenario. Explaining in your own words survives both, because you’re describing something you understand rather than replaying text. It also catches the gaps that reading hides. I found three topics I thought I knew cold that fell apart the first time I tried to say them out loud in the car.

The other half of this is knowing where the answer lives. Nobody expects a private applicant to have Part 61 memorized, and the forum consensus is that knowing to look in Part 61 for flight review requirements counts as knowing the answer. So keep a source column next to every note: regulation number, handbook, chapter. Tab your FAR/AIM. When a question genuinely stumps you, “I’d look that up in 91.213, and here’s how I’d think about it” is a real answer.

Nerves fail more applicants than gaps do

Boldmethod’s private pilot oral exam guide makes a point worth taping to your desk: you can’t know everything, and a pilot who thinks they do is more dangerous than a pilot willing to admit they don’t. It also names the mechanism that turns nervousness into a longer exam. Rush an answer and the DPE is more likely to conclude you don’t understand the topic, which produces more questions on it, which makes you more nervous.

The fix is pacing. Pause before you answer. Ask for the scenario to be reworded if it’s ambiguous, which examiners are generally happy to do. Say “let me look that up” without apologizing for it. The same writeup puts that oral at about 1.6 hours, thorough but not adversarial, and that’s the normal shape of the thing.

A study tracker you can’t see is a study tracker you don’t use. I printed mine on half-letter pages and kept it in the same binder as everything else, one page per area of operation, red items circled. Crossing a line off by hand the night before does something a checkbox in an app doesn’t.

How should I study for the oral exam?

Study the reds out loud until you can explain them without reading, then have your CFI run a mock oral on those items specifically.

Is a checkride oral prep checklist different from a checkride binder?

Yes, and you want both. The binder organizes the documents you hand over and reach for on the day: logbook, endorsements, aircraft records, weather brief, weight and balance.
